The Sammamish River Story

Before Woodinville had roads, railroads, farms, or wineries, the winding waterway called Squak Slough - now the Sammamish River - was the valley’s first highway. It carried Indigenous travelers, the Woodin family, steamboats, logs, livestock, and farm goods—and later became a roaring racetrack for tiny hydroplanes traveling more than 50 miles per hour.

Planting the Seeds of a Community Tradition

Woodinville’s Farmers Market began in 1993 through the community-building efforts of Carol Edwards, the energetic local leader often remembered as the “Mother of Woodinville.” More than a place to buy produce, the market became a Saturday gathering filled with farmers, makers, music, food, and the playful community spirit Edwards brought to so many Woodinville traditions.

Woodinville’s beloved Basset Bash began in 1983 with Gary and Patti Greene, who brought more than two basset hounds to town — they brought a wonderfully unforgettable idea. After enjoying San Diego’s annual Basset Bash, the Greenes approached Woodinville’s April Fools’ Day Parade planners about adding a basset parade and bash to the community celebration, with Carol Edwards as head of that early parade …

This house was built by Woodinville, and it is still being cared for by Woodinville.
